In response to the COVID-19 crisis, Riviana gives easy to prepare rice to students in Dallas

Riviana Foods Inc., the maker of Minute Rice products, donated more than 22,000 pounds of Minute Ready to Serve Rice to Hunger Busters, a Dallas-based charity that provides a much needed third meal of the day to food-insecure children in the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) through their “Feed the Need” after-school program. Annually, Hunger Busters provides over 350,000 meals to 11 schools and six after-school programs to address the community’s needs head-on. Riviana’s donation will provide more than 52,000 individual servings of Minute Ready to Serve Rice.

“We know this is a very difficult time for families around the country and especially students who are entering an uncertain school year this fall due to the pandemic. We are fortunate to have a nutritious and shelf-stable product to donate and we are proud to partner with Hunger Busters to ensure this product goes to local Dallas students in need,” said Sandra Kim, Senior Vice President, Marketing at Riviana. “Hunger Busters provides a critical service to keep students in the community healthy and well-fed.”

“For almost 20 years, the Dallas-based nonprofit Hunger Busters has been providing the third meal of the day for ‘food-insecure’ children who frequently have nothing to eat for dinner after a long school day. Since the pandemic began, our mission has greatly expanded and we are now holding distribution events six days a week to serve the children and their families that are so in need of a hand up at this time,” said Jason Garza, VP of Operations for Hunger Busters. “This incredibly gracious donation from Riviana of more than 52,000 individual servings of Minute Rice is so appreciated by the entire team at Hunger Busters and we value their involvement in helping to serve the Dallas community.”

RIviana’s donation to Hunger Busters is part of a nationwide effort by the company to fight hunger in communities during the pandemic. In addition to the Hunger Busters donation, this month Riviana is also coordinating donations of more than 57,000 servings of Minute Ready to Serve Rice to food banks in Tampa, Florida and Los Angeles.

Year to date, Riviana has donated more than 1.2 million servings worth of Minute Rice products to communities throughout the country. Kim pledged, “We will continue to give back to communities in need throughout this crisis.”
