Graduation season commemorates the achievements of thousands of high school and college students in the Houston area.  

On June 12, residents of Eagle’s Trace celebrated not only the success of six students employed at the retirement community but also the special bonds created between generations.

These local students, employed in the Dining Services Department of Eagle’s Trace, earned four-year collegiate scholarships.  The value of these awards is $2,000 per year for a total of $8,000 per student.

During the ceremony, it was announced that $57,400 was raised during the Student Scholarship Fund drive, mainly through contributions from residents of Eagle’s Trace.

Deborah Cate is the chair of the Scholarship Committee.  The retired chemistry teacher and principal is one of nine residents who not only lead fundraising activities but also serve as mentors to the recipients.

“These are really neat students who work so hard.  They become our surrogate grandchildren,” stated Mrs. Cate.  “As a group, we want them to continue their education, whether it’s a trade school, community college or university.  It’s a gateway to their future success.”

Eagle’s Trace employs 50 students in its two unique dining areas.  To qualify for a scholarship, a student must work 1,000 hours during a two-year period and maintain good academic and professional standing.  

For students, there is much more responsibility than just coming to work.  Prior to serving meals, student employees participate in a daily pre-shift meeting, where managers review the menu and the specific focus of the evening.  They are expected to provide excellent customer service to residents; when their shift is finished, students can also eat for free.

Nicholas Tondeur serves as a General Manager in the Dining Services Department.  “Having these young men and women employed in our restaurants helps to create special bonds between our residents and them,” described Mr. Tondeur.  “The residents love to learn about the students, build relationships and even ‘adopt’ them into their family.  It’s rewarding to see.”
