Connecticut's attorney general files a lawsuit against Exxon Mobil (XOM +0.1%) accusing the company of misleading investors and the public about its contribution to climate change, making it the latest state to target the fossil fuel industry for violating state consumer protection laws.
AG William Tong filed the lawsuit in Connecticut's Superior Court, seeking to force Exxon to pay for remediation, restitution for spending to account for climate change, disgorgement of profit, civil fines, disclosure of climate research and other penalties.
Tong says the state will examine "all of Exxon Mobil's deceptions dating back decades" as well as the company's current advertising and marketing, which he says falsely portray Exxon as working to combat climate change.
