I admit, it’s an unlikely alliance between myself and Philip Morris (NYSE:PM). I have abstained from investing in the tobacco space for years over ethical concerns. A little over a year ago, I penned an article titled: Will Ethical Investors Go Up in Smoke? In that article I acknowledged that we each have individual moral compasses that guide (or don’t) our investment decisions.
That remains true today. This is not the space for moral grandstanding or ethical imperialism. What I was attempting to reconcile in that post was for investors who do have moral conflicts with tobacco companies, whether or not they should reevaluate their objections based on the evolution of the companies themselves.
