Hi, it’s Alex Allman here, your trusted family law attorney from Offit Kurman, and this is the legal minute.

The end of school and the start of the summer brings excitement and fun, but can mean stress for divorced or separated parents. Here are a few tips:

It’s a good idea to set a staggered vacation selection schedule – one party picks their summer vacation by April 1 and the other by May 1, and then reverse next year. That will avoid both parties scheduling overlapping vacations.

The parties should decide whether to permit “tacking on,” which refers to a party scheduling a vacation at the end of their regular time, thus extending their “one week of vacation” to nine or ten days. Parties should include in their separation agreements whether or not tacking on will be permitted.

Summer vacation brings added child care costs: parties should consider whether to include those costs in the basic monthly child support calculation or whether to handle those costs separately.

Summer is a time for fun, not fights. Addressing these issues in advance can make for a more enjoyable summer for all.

Thanks for listening; stay tuned for more quick videos of legal insights that may apply to you or someone you know.
