The designations are the result of an annual survey conducted by the publication, which focuses on professional achievement and peer recognition.
Mr. Baay, co-leader of Sutherland’s energy litigation team and a partner in the firm’s Houston office, represents the energy industry in commercial litigation. His clients include multinational oil companies, drilling contractors, pipeline operators, oilfield service companies and multi-commodity traders. With trial and arbitration experience that spans the past 16 years, Mr. Baay counsels his clients in high-stakes litigation and other crisis situations. He was part of the team that represented Transocean Deepwater Drilling, Inc., in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill litigation.
Mr. Mendiola, a partner in the firm’s Austin office, advises clients in both transactional and litigation matters involving energy and regulatory law with a focus on the Texas electric energy and natural gas markets. His transactional experience includes handling regulatory issues such as pipeline regulation and transmission line routing matters. With more than 20 years of commercial litigation experience, Mr. Mendiola also represents energy clients in state and federal court and before the Public Utility Commission of Texas and other state agencies.
Mr. Roberts, a partner in the firm’s Houston office, has more than 38 years of experience in courtrooms litigating environmental, energy, commercial, international insurance, maritime and professional services matters. Recognized nationally for his litigation, insurance and maritime knowledge, he tries cases in state and federal courts at both the trial and appellate levels. Mr. Roberts concentrates much of his practice on complex legal issues surrounding offshore drilling rigs, platforms and vessels of all types including the representation of the drilling contractor involved in the BP Macondo oil spill litigation.
