LITTLETON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mevion Medical Systems announced today that it has signed a letter of intent to provide the MEVION S250i Proton Therapy System® with HYPERSCAN® Pencil Beam Scanning (PBS) to an independent service provider in Texas. The contract is expected to be completed in the second half of 2020. It will be the first compact proton therapy center in Texas.
Proton therapy is a superior form of radiation therapy that can reduce the amount of unnecessary radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue and sensitive organs at risk, such as the brain, heart, eyes, and lungs. HYPERSCAN improves on these benefits by utilizing an adaptive multi-leaf collimator to sharpen the beam and enable a more precise and conformal dose to the tumor than ever before. Mevion’s industry-leading compact proton therapy systems have reduced the enormous expenditures and space requirements needed by other systems, allowing more cancer centers the ability to add proton therapy to their treatment offerings.
The American Cancer Society estimates there will be 129,770 newly diagnosed cancer cases in Texas this year. Currently, there are only 2 proton therapy centers available to serve those patients. The addition of the MEVION S250i will expand access to proton therapy to those patients who need it most.
