As a Navy veteran and one of only three women to ever pilot a space shuttle, Kilrain is a pioneer and motivational speaker who inspires people to follow their dreams. Kilrain is a veteran of two NASA space shuttle Columbia missions, spending nearly 20 days in space. She piloted both missions in 1997 and is distinguished as one of only three women to serve as pilot of the space shuttle. Kilrain also worked at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. in the offices of Safety and Legislative Affairs. Prior to NASA, Kilrain worked for Lockheed Corporation. In 1985, she was commissioned in the Navy, earning her wings in 1987 and serving as a naval aviator flying more than 30 different types of aircraft. Kilrain left NASA in 2003 and retired from the Navy in 2005. She is a consultant and motivational speaker, specializing in encouraging young women to excel in STEM careers and inspiring her audience to follow their dreams. Kilrain holds a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She is married to Vice Admiral Colin Kilrain, Senior Military Advisor to the CIA. They have four children and reside in Washington, D.C.
