Smarter Sorting Raises $9.3 Million Seed Money

7/24/18

One year since launching as an unknown technology startup, Smarter Sorting is being recognized for its outstanding achievement in environmental efforts in product stewardship. Through its innovative technology, Smarter Sorting is taking environmental compliance to the next level. The company’s technology gives cities and retailers the tools to identify all items in their regulated waste stream by their reuse opportunity, effectively turning waste bound for incineration into products that can be reused. In recognition of its efforts, the California Product Stewardship Council (CPSC) is awarding Smarter Sorting their most prestigious honor, the Arrow Award.

With $9.3 million in seed funding and a rapidly expanding customer base, Smarter Sorting is proving that doing right and doing well go hand in hand. Smarter Sorting is transforming how municipalities and large retailers manage their environmental health and safety programs. Its technology is creating opportunities for reuse where only traditional disposal has existed.

“Receiving the Arrow Award is extremely gratifying as it confirms we are achieving the environmental and social impact we set our sights on. And of course, as a businessman, I’m incredibly gratified that we’ve done so in a way that creates enormous financial value for the retailers who are now allowing us to manage their environmental compliance programs.”

Smarter Sorting’s intelligent platform, the compliance cloud, is currently being used by 17 municipalities across the country, including in San Mateo and Marin counties, and by several of the United States’ largest retailers.

The Arrow Awards will be given out on July 28, 2018 at the Oakland Marriott City Center in Oakland, California.

About Smarter Sorting

Smarter sorting brings transparency and reuse to the incineration-only world of environmental health and safety, and consumer chemical waste management. Smarter Sorting's machine learning driven technology solution allows municipalities and retailers to avoid categorizing used or dented consumer chemical products as waste. This effectively re-designates what used to be regulated waste as product, unlocking exciting new opportunities for reuse and helping customers achieve their zero waste goals. Because of existing compliance and disposal burdens, Smarter Sorting customers save money, increase staff efficiency, and improve their compliance.
